About Andrea Edmister
From the first day of Intro to Audiology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Indiana, PA.), Andrea Edmister was hooked. The subject appealed to her so much that she went on to the University of Pittsburgh for her Master of Audiology and then her Clinical Doctorate of Audiology.
This field wasn’t completely unknown to Andrea, because her younger brother was born with a hearing loss, which was not identified until he was 4 years old. She notes that one of her graduate school professors was, ironically, the person who had identified her brother’s hearing loss.
Andrea’s work as an audiologist can be described in these simple terms: “I help people communicate better by helping them hear better.”
The way she approaches her work is with honesty. If Andrea doesn’t know the answer to a question, she isn’t afraid to say so and then find the answer. “I treat my patients the way I want my own family treated in a medial setting,” she says.

Just like audiology was an obvious choice for Andrea, she picked Beacon because of its clear commitment to providing the best patient care. She believes care is a collaborative effort between her, the patient and their support system. “Patients in general want to have their concerns really heard, listened to and considered when a plan of care is created.”
In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? As a young audiologist, I had a pediatric patient who eventually passed from cancer. He taught me about the true empathy we need in health care.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I worked in a small museum’s gift shop. I remember the stillness and sense of history that permeated when I was alone.
What is your favorite food? Movie? Favorite food: I have a weak spot for homemade bread; My favorite movie is, About Time. It encompasses all the emotions.
What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My best subject was creative writing/English. My worst subject, by far, was (and is) math.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? I would love to have one more hour with Ethan (my pediatric patient mentioned in question one). His outlook and resilience in the face of a terminal diagnosis was eye-opening for a young audiologist. Plus, I’d like to know if heaven has Legos like he hoped!
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? Reading! My mother encouraged me and my brothers to read form a young age. Literacy opens up the world.
What are your hobbies, interests? Baking, reading, getting into adventures with my husband.
Do you have pets? We have two cats (Evie and Link) that are goofy and keep us on our toes!
What is something most people don’t know about you? I can’t swim.
