About Emily Wright, MD
About Dr. Wright
While in high school, Emily R. Wright, MD, observed a complex heart surgery: a minimally invasive valve replacement. Impressed by the elegance of the procedure and the skill of the surgeon, she decided that she, too, wanted to be a cardiothoracic surgeon. “I come from a long line of physicians and had exposure to medicine from an early age,” she says. “My grandfather was the first board-certified surgeon in Indiana, and both of my parents are anesthesiologists. I also have an uncle who specialized in otolaryngology and have several other physicians in my immediate family.”
Dr. Wright earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Wake Forest University. She then obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed a cardiothoracic surgery residency at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Having realized her life-long dream, Dr. Wright says, “I work to treat problems with the heart and lungs. This includes the treatment of various cancers, re-establishing cardiac blood supply, and repairing or replacing heart valves.”
She takes a patient-first approach as a physician and aims to care for the entire person. Knowing that hospitalization can be stressful for the patient and their family members, Dr. Wright says she believes that building a personal relationship can improve the care experience. “Patients have taught me that even during dark times in their lives, small things can mean a huge difference,” she says.
In her own words…
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? My first job was a summer job working as a bicycle attendant on Kiawah Island. I got to explore the island on my off days.
What is your favorite food? Movie? My favorite food is French onion soup My favorite movie is Zoolander
What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My best subject in school was Chemistry. I loved running experiments with everyday chemicals.
My worst subject in school was Language Arts – we just had too many essays!
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? Elton John. He has surmounted so many obstacles and is a fabulous human being. Hands-down, I think he’s the best artist of our time.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I was a golfer in college and have loved the game my entire life. I also love to downhill ski and hike with my husband and my two Newfoundland dogs.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
