About Gabriela Romo, MD
While her initial dream was to become a professional soccer player with Plan B to work as a physical therapist or athletic trainer, that all changed during sophomore year of college for Gabriela Romo, MD. When a 30-year-old cousin fell into a coma and then rapidly declined, without anyone understanding why, Dr. Romo began a deep personal reflection. “I never imagined I could be as passionate about something as I was about soccer – until I discovered medicine,” she says. “From that moment, I began seeking out opportunities to better understand the field and see if it was truly the path I wanted to take.”
Dr. Romo is a graduate of Purdue University (Fort Wayne campus), where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She earned her Master of Public Health at Indiana University-Purdue University (Indianapolis) and her Doctor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (South Bend campus). Her Family Medicine Residency was completed at Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Program, South Bend, where she focused on Underserved Medicine.
Dr. Romo says her love for primary preventive care and the deep value she places on human connections led her to choose family medicine as her specialty. “I believe every human being wants to be seen, heard, understood, respected and genuinely helped,” she says.
Staying curious, humble and having a listening attitude help her provide the best care for patients. “Being responsible for someone’s health is an incredible privilege, and I strive to deliver quality care with their best interests at heart,” Dr. Romo says.
In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My mother – for always encouraging me to discover and follow my purpose.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? ASA Electronics – long hours, sore muscles, but also great camaraderie.
What is your favorite food? Movie? What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? Food: Birria; Movie: Gladiator
Best subject: Math; Worst subject: English
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? Cristiano Ronaldo, for showing how passion and purpose can push you to achieve the unimaginable.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? Soccer (I hope to coach again), singing along to music, dancing when no one’s watching, and watching Modern Family and movies.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I don't know how to swim, but my goal is to learn.
