About Maxwell Winkler, MD
About Dr. Winkler
It was during family dinners while growing up that Maxwell L. Winkler, MD, heard his physician father talk about his day and interactions with patients. “I saw how rewarding and how frustrating it could be, but what I remembered most was the human connections he made,” he says.
Dr. Winkler earned two undergraduate degrees at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI (Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology and Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language). He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI; completed his orthopedic residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse, NY; and an orthopedic trauma fellowship at Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland, OH.

As an orthopedic trauma surgeon, Dr. Winkler fixes broken bones, and treats some infections and wounds to people’s arms and legs. “I chose this because of the variety of patients I get to meet and surgeries I’m privileged to do,” he says, adding, “I also appreciate that what I do is usually morally clear and offers tremendous benefit to my patients. Medical science isn’t always clear-cut, but when I offer somebody surgery for their broken leg, there is no question about if it will help them.”
In his own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My father was probably my strongest formative influence. Although we don’t always agree, he taught me how to lead a disciplined life and was an excellent role model for caring about other people.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I used to work with a general contractor doing jobs on my parents’ 100-year-old house. I learned how to use a lot of the tools that I now use in surgery!
What is your favorite food? Movie? Food: Pizza; Movie: Take Shelter
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? I’d like to talk with any number of orthopedic inventors – Gerhard Küntscher who popularized intramedullary nailing, Sir John Charnley who could be considered the father of modern joint replacements, or Homer Stryker who invented orthopedic tools to better meet his patients’ needs.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I love going to the gym and lifting weights, I’m an amateur woodworker, and I enjoy finding new places to eat and drink with my wife.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I’m a scuba diver (although I haven’t been diving in a while), and my deepest dive was over 300 feet.
