Elaine M. Fan, MD, is a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist and board-certified clinical informaticist who provides compassionate, patient-centered care to children with blood disorders and cancer. She earned her medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School/Baystate Medical Center. She went on to complete fellowship training in pediatric hematology-oncology at the University of Utah and Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital, where she also earned a master’s degree in biomedical informatics.
Dr. Fan partners closely with patients and families throughout diagnosis, treatment and survivorship, emphasizing clear communication, trust and shared decision-making. In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential person or role model in your life? My uncle, who supported me when I moved to the United States as a teenager and instilled the values of integrity, independence and service.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I worked as a college tutor, where I learned how to break down complex ideas into simple, understandable concepts—skills I still use when communicating with patients and families.
What were your best and most challenging subjects in school? English was my strongest subject, even while growing up in China. Chinese was one of my more challenging subjects.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone, who would it be and why? Jesus Christ, for a meaningful conversation about faith, purpose and service.
What are your hobbies and interests? I enjoy learning new languages and traveling, especially exploring different cultures, visiting national parks and experiencing new places.
