About Ryan A. Schmelter, DO Ryan A. Schmelter, DO, is a vascular surgeon who cares for patients with conditions affecting the arteries and veins. His clinical focus includes peripheral arterial disease (PAD), carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysms, deep vein thrombosis, dialysis access and vascular trauma. One of Dr. Schmelter's greatest strengths is building strong relationships with patients. He enjoys translating complex medical information into clear, understandable language and believes patients should feel informed every step of the way. By taking time to answer questions and explain treatment options, he helps patients feel comfortable, supported and empowered to participate in their care. Dr. Schmelter completed a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at McLaren Flint Hospital in Flint, Michigan. He completed his General Surgery Residency at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove, Illinois. Dr. Schmelter is board certified in general surgery and has contributed to research published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
