About Sunday Osunnuga, MD
Ask Beacon hospitalist Dr. Sunday Osunnuga what he finds intriguing about medicine and chances are he will describe a lifelong love of science and fascination about how the human body works. Don’t be surprised if cells, atoms and neurons also enter the conversation.
“Medicine has always been and continues to captivate me,” said Dr.
Osunnuga, who was born in Nigeria and has more than 30 years of experience caring for patients. “Imagine the amount of research being done right now that we’re not even aware of that will change how we do things in five or 10 years. It’s incredible. I love what I do.”
In his next breath, Dr. Osunnuga describes the honor of caring for patients. With degrees in physical therapy and general surgery, he spent years working with orthopedists and as an emergency room physician. As a hospitalist at Beacon, Dr. Osunnuga sees himself as both a patient manager and a gatekeeper to our specialists.

“I believe the best way to deliver care is to connect with patients and know their stories. I always give my patients my time and undivided attention to learn their story. Who are they, aside from their illness or disease?” he said.
“We need to see the person as a whole. It’s important to empathize with patients and put yourself in their shoes. We are here to serve them and give them quality, compassionate care.”
IN HIS OWN WORDS
What was your first job? I worked as a dye chemist and as a quantity surveyor assistant in Nigeria.
How many languages do you speak? My native language is Yoruba, and I can speak a little bit of French and Spanish.
What is something that would surprise people about you? I like to sing and dance, play table tennis and I’m a very good juggler.
Your daughter scored a perfect score on her SAT and ACT. What is your parenting secret? To lead by example. When my wife and I tell our kids to work hard, they need to see us working hard.
What would you be if you weren’t a doctor? I’d love to be an astrophysicist or astronaut. I’d go up into space, look down at the earth and marvel.
