About David Chi, MD
About Dr. Chi
By the end of his third year of medical school, Dr. David Chi decided to pursue medicine as his career. “Out of all the rotations I’ve experienced, I enjoyed [internal] medicine the most,” he says. “I enjoyed working in the hospital setting and I think it is a better fit for me than in the outpatient setting.
Dr. Chi’s approach to practicing medicine is to always obtain a very good history and physical exam as missed details can lead to missed diagnosis and delayed treatment. From patients, he has learned from his patients that things may never always go your way, but empathy is an important part of how he works with people. “I often try to educate patients when they’re ill, so I hope patients [are] able to understand more about their own conditions and live healthier,” he says.

While he is the first doctor in his family, his sister is a nurse with Beacon and that is how he came to work in South Bend. “During my interview here, everyone was very nice, which left a good impression on me, and I feel that I can fit in with the group. Plus, it’s close to home.”
In his own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My parents.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I was a volunteer piano player in a public lobby at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. I was a high school student at the time. I remember people would stop by to listen to my music.
What is your favorite food? Movie? What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My favorite food is pho. Favorite movie is Rush Hour. My best subject was math and my worst subject was English literature.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? My maternal grandfather who passed away before I was born.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I enjoy playing basketball and watching the Dallas Mavericks. I also enjoy traveling, trying good food, listening to music, sketching, playing the piano/violin, playing games.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I like sour candies but I don’t like chocolate.
